Top 10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer: Essential Considerations for Your Big Day

You're in the throes of wedding planning, you've got your venue, the date is set, and now it's time to find a photographer who will document your special day. You want an expert who can truly capture the magic and emotion of your event, but how do you choose?

Finding the perfect wedding photographer can be a daunting task. Just as with every service you contract for your wedding, you want to ensure that they are the right fit for you. Here are the top 10 questions to ask your wedding photographer to ensure they will capture your big day in the way you've always dreamed of.


1. Can we view samples of your previous work?

A professional wedding photographer should be more than willing to show you their wedding portfolio. Viewing their previous work will give you a clear idea of their style and skill.

2. How many weddings have you photographed?

Experience counts in this industry. An experienced photographer will be able to anticipate spontaneous moments and know how to manage the unexpected.


At Chad Populis Photography, I've photographed over 50 weddings as a lead photographer and dozens others as an assistant. i've also been a videographer on countless other weddings and events.


3. What is your photographic style?

Every wedding photographer has a distinctive style, whether that's traditional, journalistic, creative, or a mix. The style that suits you best will depend on your personal preference.


I tend to combine journalistic style of photography to document your wedding day.



4. Do you have backup equipment?

Murphy’s Law is real, and the last thing you want on your wedding day is a photographer without functional equipment. Ensure they have backup gear available.


I always have at least 1 other photographer/assistant available on your wedding day as well as extra backup equipment in the event of any equipment failure to ensure all the events of your day is captured.

5. How will you handle photographing our wedding and reception?

This question will allow you to get a sense of how your photographer will operate on the day and what they plan to focus on.


I send out a wedding questionnaire prior to the wedding day so we both know the logistics and the expectations.


6. Can we give you a list of specific shots we would like?

You may have particular moments that you want to capture. Having a discussion about this in advance will ensure that your photographer is aware of your expectations.


In addition to a wedding information form, I also provide a wedding shot checklist form.



7. What kind of packages do you offer?

This question is about business logistics—you need to know how much their services are going to cost and what exactly you're getting for your money.

8. Do you offer a photo album as part of your package?

Some photographers offer custom-designed albums for your wedding photos, and these can be a wonderful keepsake.


All of my packages include a wedding album.


9. Do you have insurance coverage?

You want to make sure your photographer is professionally covered against any accidents.


We do business as an LLC and we have general liability insurance.


10. How long after the wedding can we expect to receive our photos?

Knowing when you can expect to receive your photos will help you plan your post-wedding schedules better.



Typically, most digital wedding images are delivered within 2 weeks but may take up to 6 weeks depending on the deliverables, edits, and communication. Print products may take up to 8 weeks to be delivered.
